ADVANSA Got Eco-Award and Label
Uentrop, Germany, December 7 2007 - ADVANSA, the largest polyester fibre manufacturer in Europe, is committed to provide products respecting the environment by improving the ecological quality of products and production processes. In the light of this, ADVANSA’s site in Uentrop received on November 29th, an award from ECOprofit, Ecological Project for Integrated Environmental Technology, adopted in more than 300 European cities. ADVANSA is also launching filling fibres for pillows and duvets, Hollofil® Eco and Comforel® Eco, awarded by the European Union Eco-Label.
ADVANSA’s ecological initiatives throughout Europe
Numerous initiatives are undertaken by ADVANSA to respect the environment: at ADVANSA’s site in Uentrop, Germany, residues from production are biologically treated at a waste water plant, and the recycled water is pumped out of the plant and tested on a regular basis for quality. In accordance with ADVANSA’s Safety Health and Environment philosophy, all stages of production are strictly reviewed according to safety management guidelines. The Uentrop site also publishes an annual environmental report presenting the environmental initiatives undertaken at the plant and the results that have been accomplished.
The ADVANSA site in Adana, Turkey respects the Principles of Responsible Care as proof of the chemical industry’s commitment to continued improvement in all aspects of safety, health and environmental performance. In view of these principles, the Adana site is constantly upgrading its plant liquid effluents treatment and looking for substitution finishes for fibre products that are environmentally-friendly.
For the first time this year, ADVANSA participates in the ECOprofit project (Ecological Project for Integrated Environmental Technology) in Germany. The Land North Rhine-Westphalia awarded on November 29th, the company for its achievements in this project. This synergetic partnership between local authorities and companies is primarily focused on the optimal control of waste, energy and material flows. By participating in this initiative, ADVANSA is proving its strong commitment to the environment and to sustainable development.
Heinz Meierkord, ADVANSA’s Vice President Marketing & Sales, who received in an special ceremony the ECO profit award declares: “We are glad to be granted it today. ADVANSA is actually heavily involved in major environmental projects such as ECOprofit. In addition to this program, ADVANSA is further investigating various energy reduction possibilities and is targeting a 25% reduction on overall energy consumption within the next four years which will benefit not only the company but also the environment and the region as a whole.”
After one year focusing on the ECOprofit project, ADVANSA was able to implement projects with annual savings of 18,845.059 kWh of energy and to save 50,454m³ of water. This has lead to yearly financial savings but more importantly CO2 emission reductions of 6,300 tons. During that time approximately 500,000 euros were invested in energy projects.
Within these activities, ADVANSA also acquired the partnership of the voluntary European GreenLight Programme. This programme has been developed to involve key companies in the installation of efficient lighting systems and thus in the saving of energy. ADVANSA has engaged to respect the European Commission guidelines for this programme and therefore has accepted to be reviewed on a yearly basis. Since 2004, ADVANSA upgraded more than 13,000m² of production and storage areas in terms of lighting and is saving more than 230 tons of CO2 emissions due to lighting upgrades.
Hollofil ® Eco & Comforel ® Eco bolster ADVANSA’s “green products” portfolio
Hollofil ® Eco & Comforel ® Eco, are the first polyester fillings to fulfil the requirements of the European Union Ecolabel. These filling fibres and clusters for pillows and duvets have gone through rigorous tests to guarantee their environmental quality, all the while maintaining their high-tech comfort benefits.
These products are the warranty of:
-
a reduction in the use of hazardous substances
-
the emission of Volatile Organic Carbon to air during polymer production is < 1.2g/kg
-
the listing of all chemicals used during the production steps: the safety datasheets are provided and checked e.g for biodegradability, safety in use, harmless for the environment.
ADVANSA’s products are also certified “OekoTex”, in recognition of their safety for end users due to the non-use of hazardous ingredients. ADVANSA has also launched a new “3GT” fibre made from DuPont Sorona® polymer, for the clothing industry. One of its distinguishing features is that it is composed of natural ingredients such as corn, which reduces its impact on the environment.
These “green” initiatives are the results of ADVANSA’s belief that health & safety and the protection of the environment are fundamental to the success of its business and is a critical part of every decision they make.
