What Is PET Resin ?

Walk around any supermarket and you will see countless examples of PET in one of its main uses - packaging. Its purity, strength, transparency, light weight and safety make it one of the leading materials for bottling carbonated soft drinks, mineral waters, juices, edible oils and personal care products and packaging prepacked foods and meals. So what is it?

PET is the abbreviation for the chemical PolyEthylene Terephthalate. It is a polymer (a material of similar molecular units joined together into a long chain) formed from the processing of the following materials: PTA, mono ethylene glycol (MEG), small quantities of isophthalic acid (IPA) and various additives and catalysts designed to give it optimal processing and product properties. The manufacture (process) involves chemical processes such as esterification, polymerisation, cutting and solid-state polymerisation.

The brand name for ADVANSA's PET Resin is Melinar®. Melinar® is a range of leading polymers (products) used across the spectrum of uses of PET, most notably in lightweight yet high strength and unbreakable crystal clear bottles, jars, trays, tubs, boxes, containers, and glazing sheets.

ADVANSA (as ICI) first produced Melinar® on a plant in the Netherlands in 1979, at Wilton in 1982 and in the USA in 1989. Commercial production of PET in Turkey started in the 1980s. We currently operate world scale resins manufacturing plants at Wilton (M5) and Adana (CP5/SSP2), manufacturing the full range of Melinar® products.

In addition to the manufacture of Melinar®, ADVANSA has its own preform and bottle manufacturing business in Turkey.
At our bottle plants we manufacture and develop increasingly complex PET performs for use across the range of bottle and container applications.
